Learn About Energy Efficiency!
Saturday, February 11
10:00 a.m.—12:00 noon
Please join the First Church Environmental Committee and Social Justice Council for February’s social justice activity for adults and youths on Saturday, February 11 from 10:00 a.m. – noon in the Common Room.
Environment a Major Concern...

One of the top three social justice concerns identified during the council’s survey of the congregation last fall was the environment. In its November 2011 press release, the World Meteorological Organization stated: “Global temperatures in 2011 are currently the tenth highest on record and are higher than any previous year with a La Niña event, which has a relative cooling influence. The 13 warmest years have all occurred in the 15 years since 1997.” Rather than feeling overwhelmed in the face of climate change, this is an opportunity for us come together to learn how to collectively and proactively take additional steps to reduce our carbon footprint.
Tom Brandstetter to Speak
Continuing his leadership with First Church’s Sustain our Society Initiative, Tom Brandstetter will facilitate the adult portion of the activity. Tom will speak to ethics and the lifestyle choices we can make, using his own energy bill as an example of how he was able to reduce his carbon footprint by 80%. He will be joined by Milwaukee Energy Efficiency Program (Me2) representatives, who will provide concrete suggestions about steps to take in your home. You can sign up for a free energy advocate through Me2 as well as a reduced cost home energy audit.
Activities for Older Children and Child Care Available
Youths 10 and older are also invited to learn how they can do their part. They will meet in the Young Room with Karen Nenahlo of the K-12 Energy Efficiency Program (KEEP), who will provide an overview of the topic and help them develop service projects for school or in the community. To register you and your child 10 and older and to request child care, sign up at the Social Justice Table by February 9. Child care is available with pre-registration.
