Dear RE Family Members,

For over sixty years, “Trick or Treat for UNICEF” has been an important tradition among American children; some of you may have participated yourself. Our Sunday School classes will continue that tradition this month.

I believe that our participation in the UNICEF campaign will help our children to develop the practice of putting their faith into action. Participation in this project reflects our Unitarian Universalist principles in a very real way, by teaching the concepts of compassion and responsibility.

The Children’s RE Committee would welcome your support and involvement in this project. This month we will introduce the UNICEF theme in all classes.  Here is what you can expect:

  • SUNDAY, OCTOBER 9- Kick off day for the campaign in Children’s Chapel for First-Fourth Grades.
  • SUNDAY, OCTOBER 16- First-Ninth Grade classes will be creating crafts to sell in our UNICEF Bazaar next Sunday.
  • SUNDAY, OCTOBER 23- ANNUAL RE UNICEF BAZAAR TO BE HELD IN OTTO HALL IMMEDIATELY FOLLOWING THE 9:45AM AND 11:15AM SERVICES,with each class selling craft items they have made for $1.00-$5.00, and a group Bake Sale. (see below*)   Early Childhood classes will also be introduced to the concept of Kids Helping Kids by supporting UNICEF today.
  • SUNDAY, OCTOBER 31- Children will be Trick or Treating for UNICEF during the Coffee Hour. Bring your change jars to support their efforts!

If your neighborhood has trick or treating before October 30, and your child would like to collect UNICEF donations while they go Trick or Treating, you may pick up a UNICEF box at the UNICEF Bazaar on October 23.

Please talk to your children about the good work they can do, about your own thoughts on generosity and compassionate gifts, and how being a part of the UNICEF project is a way to live out our beliefs as Unitarian Universalists.  I welcome your questions or comments; please feel free to contact me at anytime.

* We are asking that children in each class contribute to our Bake Sale on October 23. If you have several children in your family, feel free to choose just one of the bake sale projects to make together. Families are encouraged to have young people actively helping to prepare the bake sale goodies if at all possible.  If you missed the Bake Sale handout with recipes, please look online for basic assignments.
