2007-2008 Church Year – Sunday Programs

Nursery / 8:30 a.m.-12:15 p.m. and 4:45-5:15 p.m.
Our caregivers provide an atmosphere of loving care and attention for infants and toddlers. Our Nursery Coordinators are paid staff members and supported by weekly volunteers. Parents are asked to sign their children in, and to provide diapers, bottles, etc. An age-appropriate dinner snack will be available for toddlers during the 5:00 p.m. service. Members and regular visitors are encouraged to register their children in the RE program. If our nursery reaches capacity, priority is given to children already registered. A speaker broadcasts the Sunday Service in the church’s parlor for parents who don’t wish to be separated from their little ones during the service.
K3-K4 / 8:45 a.m.
K3-K5 / 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
CELEBRATING ME AND MY WORLD includes simple rituals, crafts, music and play that help our littlest UUs to feel comfortable in our church community as they celebrate themselves and the world around them. Additional lesson plans related to a variety of religious and cultural holidays will occur throughout the year. It’s “hands-on” and active – perfect for preschoolers. Please dress your children for possible messy work!
K5-2nd Grades / 8:45 a.m.
1st-2nd Grades / 11:00 a.m.
STORIES ABOUT GOD fosters the understanding that the idea of God is a universal one, but can take many forms and is called by many names. Children will become acquainted with some of these forms through stories, games and crafts. This program aims to help children develop a language with which they can speak of God, mystery and wonder.
3rd-4th Grades / 8:45 a.m.
3rd-5th Grades / 11:00 a.m.
TIMELESS THEMES introduces children to classic Hebrew and Christian stories with enduring themes of human responsibility, love of freedom, speaking out against injustice, respect for the beliefs of others, love of one’s neighbor and forgiveness. Each class invites children to think about issues that either support or challenge UU principles and purposes.
5th-6th Grades / 8:45 a.m.
BIBLEODEAN presents the best-known Hebrew and Christian stories using props like the Bibleodeon microphone and interactive challenges such as investigating the Cain-Abel crime scene. During the year, participants will act in skits, illustrate a time line, keep doodle books, give awards to outstanding biblical women, and more. They will also explore connections between biblical events and UU principles and between biblical ideas and their own lives.
1st-6th Grades / 5:00 p.m.
YOUNG BRIGHT UNITARIAN UNIVERSALISTS (YBUU) encourages children to explore and question the rituals, beliefs, mysteries and wonders of the world! They’ll learn about UU principles and practices within a hands-on, one-room schoolhouse setting. Our goal is to provide children with a variety of diverse experiences and role models that enhance their lives. We hope to help them develop “sense of self” and feel valued and comfortable as a part of the world family, with empathy and responsibility for others. Special guests from the congregation and community will enhance learning experiences, and broaden a sense of connection by including adults with whom the children might not normally interact.
7th-8th Grades / 8:45 a.m.
6th-8th Grades / 11:00 a.m.
NEIGHBORING FAITHS introduces the faith traditions and practices of other religious groups in the community and discusses how these traditions and practices relate to UU. Students learn about other spiritual paths through in-class instruction and discussion, group visits to local places of worship and visitors from other faith communities. This well-rounded approach allows the youth to reflect on unique and universal religious experiences, as well as explore their own values as they relate to other faith traditions. Note: Depending on the faith tradition, some trips may occur at times other than Sunday mornings.
7th-9th Grades / 5:00 p.m.
JUNIOR ASSISTANTS will attend a training session, after which they’ll be assigned to various areas of RE. They may provide nursery care, assist in the Early Childhood room, or help with the YBUUs. Depending on needs, Junior Assistants will help to teach the evening’s topic, provide guidance to younger children and nurture our littlest UUs. This is a great way for youth to put UU principles into practice.
9th-12th Grades / 9:45-11:00 a.m.
YOUNG RELIGIOUS UNITARIAN UNIVERSALISTS (YRUU) offers a supportive environment in which teens can explore their feelings about themselves, their world and their religion. Some curriculum is used, as determined by the desires of the group. Social Action projects, leadership development and opportunities for worship round out the program. Our youth develop and present a church service each spring, which is often one of the year’s highlights. There will also be an opportunity for youth age 16 and over to join our summer Mission Trip program working for Habitat for Humanity.

Saturday Program: Our Whole Lives (OWL)

7th-8th Grades / 3:30-9:00 p.m.
(limited capacity; available to children of church members only)
OWL presents a comprehensive approach to human sexuality in an age-appropriate manner based firmly on the values of respect, responsibility, justice and inclusivity. It helps young people apply these values to their behavior and provides information and skills they can use throughout life. It equips participants with accurate, age-appropriate information about six subjects—human development, relationships, personal skills, sexual behavior, sexual health, and society and culture—to present a holistic view of sexuality. Parents must attend a mandatory orientation in order for their child to participate in the OWL class (even if prior children have participated).
