Covenant, Community, and other Frequent Confusions

By: The Rev. Dr. Lindsay Bates

So many folks come to our Unitarian Universalist congregations with unhappy experiences, or no experiences, of how congregations operate. But for our way of walking together to work, we need to share an understanding what it means to be a Covenanted Community. Ours is a free faith; not the faith of the free ride…

The Rev. Dr. Lindsay Bates is the Senior Minister at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva, IL. She has served as their Senior Minister for almost 29 years, having been called right after her graduation from Meadville/Lombard Theological School. Last year, after two years of working with interim ministers, Lindsay and the Geneva congregation started a new chapter in their history, calling their first Associate Minister.

Our Calling to Grow

By: Rev. Andrew C. Kennedy

The Rev. Kennedy Comments: “Just as we are called to grow as individuals, so, too, our congregation continues to grow. We now have over 700 members. Why should we want to grow anymore? Isn’t 700 enough? Besides, it’s so crowded, especially at 9:15. Join me as we review our “calling to grow,” drawing on the research of Thom Rainer, whose book Breakout Churches suggests that four-fifths of our country’s 400,000 churches are either in decline or stagnant. Come, too, to learn how here at First Church we are breaking all the rules, according to Rainer, with our liberal spiritual approach.”

Ministry: The Small and the Deep

By: Rev. Craig D. Schwalenberg

“Never underestimate the power of a small group of committed people to change the world. In fact, it is the only thing that ever has.” Margaret Mead

But how? The world is so big and we are so small. The problems are many and we are but one.

The secret lies in our work with the small and deep.
