“I Could Be Illegal”
The Reverend Dena McPhetres, speaking
Many delegates wore buttons with the phrase “I Could Be Illegal” at the General Assembly of Unitarian Universalists last June in Minneapolis. Maybe you were one of them. It was a way to express frustration with our country’s broken immigration system, and a way to express solidarity with those who feel under siege since SB 1070 was passed in Arizona. The issue was so hot back in June that the Assembly voted to approve “Immigration as a Moral Issue” as the Study-Action issue for the next four years for any UU congregation who wants to engage the issue. This sermon will serve as an introduction to the complex and polarizing issue of immigration. My hope is that many conversations will follow, and perhaps some of you will figure out how to intentionally engage with our GA Study-Action issue in future months. — Dena
