The Rev. Dena McPhetresIntroduction

by the Reverend Dena McPhetres, Associate Minister

This house of faith is already an energy-generating community. Now we’ve made it literal, by installing solar panels on our roof! We regularly “raise the roof” with energetic, inspiring Sunday services. Since we went “over the top” of our fund-raising goal in 2009, we were able to insulate the roof of our 1892 sanctuary in 2010. Due to the generosity of our members and friends, we've joined the ranks of other congregations in the Milwaukee metro area who have installed solar panels and taken other energy-conserving measures to be better stewards of this precious planet. Our “Sustain Our Society” team has reached out to other faith communities who want to make sustainable changes to tell them our story and how we did it. Together, we are making a difference.

The spiritual foundation that underlies our energy-generating, energy-conserving work includes the traditional values of faith, hope and love, recast for the 21st century. Faith that our actions make a difference. Hope in a positive, creative future. Love for humanity and the interdependent web of all existence, which we hold sacred. The First Unitarian Society of Milwaukee has taken many steps toward becoming a sustainable society over the years. The “Sustain Our Society” initiative builds on past efforts and accomplishments, including the achievement of “Green Sanctuary” status, awarded to us by the Unitarian Universalist Association in 2009.

Each step we take toward becoming a sustainable society makes a difference. Through taking incremental steps, we can change the world for the better. Visit our website to discover how much carbon dioxide we are NOT releasing into the atmosphere, due to the renewable energy initiatives that have now become a reality. Contemplate how much we are NOT spending on fossil fuels, and consider what you might do in your own private life, or better yet, in your community organizations to contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gases and global warming.

Once you start learning about what we can do, and especially what we can do together, it is hard not to be inspired.
